Developing the Lab of the Future through workflow automation and enhanced lab communications

Titian

Laboratories today have more technology and equipment at their disposal than ever before, and automation is fast becoming the norm, allowing drug discovery processes to run faster, more efficiently, and with more focus on accurate results.

For a long time, Titian’s aim for Mosaic Sample Management Software has been to allow scientists to focus on their science by decreasing the burden of optimising sample management processes. One of the ways we focus on workflow automation is by collaborating with organisations to seamlessly connect Mosaic to the storage, labware, liquid handling, and laboratory automation, tracking metadata for the sample’s lifecycle.

While we often see the success and results of how Mosaic works in the lab through our customers, we were delighted to be awarded the Lab of the Future Badge at SLAS2024.

Developing a sample management system that supports the lab of the future

While we can’t predict exactly what the lab of the future looks like, we do have an unfair advantage by working with some of the most innovative life science and drug discovery labs in the world, along with some incredible partners!

This allows us to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to new technology and processes, as well as bring new ideas to the sample management industry, including voice-operated data entry, IoT devices, augmented reality and mobile apps.

With these new technologies, Titian Mosaic Sample Management Software brings samples, instruments, automation, data, and people together to address business logic initiatives, supporting the creation of a Lab of the Future.

As pharmaceutical and biotech companies look at research programs holistically, Mosaic has become foundational in ensuring that sample and cell line data is tracked, managed, and audited across internal and external customers.

Increasing workflow automation in life science laboratories

We provide a complete sample dataset through a deep understanding of integration workflows and collaboration with industry partners in liquid handling, labware storage, detection systems, registration software, electronic laboratory notebooks, laboratory automation platforms, mobile robots, and more.

Through these integrations, Mosaic helps to automate the different lab workflows and processes, with data being passed from the lab equipment straight into the sample management platform, where scientists can track and manage the data as needed.

Take weighing as an example - by integrating an analytical balance with Mosaic, exact dispense amounts are recorded and automatically updated in Mosaic's inventory without manual input. Furthermore, with the introduction of weighing by voice (coming soon!), you can provide voice commands to Mosaic while weighing your substance.

This type of automation extends to many of the lab equipment integrations Mosaic has in place, ensuring that the sample inventory is always up to date, regardless of the workflow or where the sample is stored.

As science and research techniques evolve, these ready-to-use integrations will be instrumental in furthering medical discoveries and ensuring that the sample inventory is always up to date, regardless of the workflow or where the sample is stored.

Enhancing laboratory communication

Mosaic brings peace of mind to scientists and lab operators by removing the mental load of sample tracking, logistics and optimised processing while ensuring an auditable chain of custody.

Mosaic users can easily view sample and workflow information, increasing transparency and providing up-to-date process information. For example, through Mosaic’s intuitive location browser, sample storage is broken down by lab, room and storage type, making it easy to view where samples are stored in different locations.

Working with many different types and sizes of organisations, we strive to enhance laboratory communication that allows growth, scalability and transparency.

Many CROs use Mosaic because it guarantees the quality of their sample traceability and audit trail to their customers and provides global sample management and logistics. For companies using multiple CROs, functionality such as Mosaic’s Partner Portal readily shares inventory between organisations while protecting confidentiality. Sample management teams can track samples across their CROs or other partners as if these samples were in-house.

Even small biotech or therapeutics companies often handle complex libraries comprising many sample types (such as small molecules, biologics, tissue, and cell lines). The different parameters and requirements mean these are often held in silos, managed by other departments.

However, Mosaic tracks and handles all types of samples and reagents, so companies of any size can benefit from the efficiencies and accessibility of a centralised inventory. Mosaic then makes the data readily available; for example, an inventory query based on scientific terms or a barcode scan will provide the complete sample dataset.

Large and small companies benefit from secure global sample management, which can start with the basics and then grow, following their samples across partner organisations. Mosaic’s sample flexibility means it can be shared by different groups in a single organisation, increasing its cost-effectiveness and ability to optimise usage for existing instruments and materials.
