Inventory needs to be updated frequently and accurately when samples are transferred from one piece of labware to another, or when labware moves from place to place.
For example, if a tube rack is dropped or part-filled racks need to be consolidated to optimize freezer storage space, these new tube locations need to be reflected in inventory. If done manually, inventory updates are time consuming and it is easy to introduce errors.
